    Financial News

From Mr Richard Owens, Chairman of the Jerusalem and the East Mission Trust Limited.

Funds needed for projects in each Diocese

Against a background of difficult financial conditions worldwide, the total income received and grants made are similar to last year.
(Balance Sheet - opens in a new window)

There is a continuing requirement in the Province of Jerusalem and the Middle East for funds to assist in development projects in the Dioceses of Egypt and Cyprus and the Gulf. Funds are also required to mitigate the persisting problems in the Diocese of Jerusalem. However, the balance of both income and expenditure is different.

This year a most successful Appeal for funds to enlarge St Andrew’s Church Kyrenia, has increased the overall donations received. However, we have not received any legacies, whereas we received £25,000 last year.

Likewise, Grants are also difficult to compare with last year. The Diocese of Jerusalem was given additional funding last year at the request of the Province, and this has now reverted to the level of earlier years. The specific appeal for St. Andrew’s, Kyrenia, has enhanced the figures for Cyprus and the Gulf, whilst social and educational developments in Egypt have been supported by additional funds for the Diocese. The conflict in Iraq has not yet had an impact on requirements for grants, but it must be anticipated that the church in Iraq will need support and financial resources in the future.

Each year the priorities change, and whilst all the Dioceses have on-going and important requirements for financial assistance, there will always be one area or project that is in the most urgent need of immediate support. Investment revenue is unlikely to increase significantly in the near future, and income from legacies is unpredictable. We continue to rely on the generosity of the people who support the work of the Province.

Gift Aid makes an increasingly positive impact on our revenue and last year, including the St Andrew’s appeal, we recovered £13,000. Gift Aid Declarations are regularly enclosed with copies of Bible Lands, and can also be obtained by contacting the Farnham office.

I would encourage everyone to use this simple form. It significantly enhances your contribution to the Province at no cost to you, and these additional funds can materially help the churches in Jerusalem and the Middle East.
