Christmas 2005Despite the harsh conditions in Gaza, the various activities at the hospital have continued to function well, and the urology, orthopaedics and paediatric surgeries have been expanded. We have also expanded the emergency services, successfully operated 20 free medical clinics for povertystricken patients, and treated without charge about 2000 people. The latest free medical mission was addressed to Atfalona deaf children of Gaza, where we were able to examine and treat more than 300 people with impaired hearing. The hospital has also started a one year programme for three new graduate doctors in emergency patient care, as well as a six months training course for four new graduate practical nurses in operating theatre techniques. These programmes include theoretical content as well as patient care management and problem solving discussions. Due to the current conditions of uncertainty on the ground and the existing state of unrest, we are in dire need of support for an urgent medicine budget, out-reach free medical missions for five clinics, training course for ICU nurses, and food for the hungry.
Bishops trapped in Gaza A delegation of Episcopal Bishops from the United States took part in a pilgrimage organised by the Revd Robert W. Tobin and his wife Maurine Tobin, the Bishop’s Consultants for Justice and Peace in Israel/Palestine. As well as meeting Palestinian and Israeli politicians and peace activists, and local Jews, Christians and Muslims, they also visited the Al Ahli Anglican Hospital in Gaza. On their return journey, they were held back at Erez checkpoint and had to stay in Gaza overnight. Only the following day were they allowed to re-enter Israel and return to Jerusalem.
