Book reviews: |
Christmas 2005In this issue there is good news of the Anglican Centre in Qatar, and harrowing news from Baghdad. You can read of a clergy resident permit withdrawn in Asmara, and of ordinations in Cyprus, Jerusalem and Tripoli. The accounts show generosity from churches, trusts and individuals, but much more is needed to support the growth of the churches and their outreach. For example, finance is needed for the Harpur Community Health Centre, for security in Baghdad, and for medicine for Al Ahli Hospital, Gaza. Bishop Riah wrote, “With you the walk is easier”. Please make the walk easier for people in the Province by increasing your annual donation, if at all possible, and by using the Month of Prayer, praying for clergy and people in the Diocese of Iran, Jerusalem, Egypt & North Africa, and Cyprus & the Gulf. The books reviewed will also help by increasing your knowledge of the problems and opportunities in the area. Christmas, in Britain at least, is a time for Christmas crackers and riddles. Here is a riddle for you, “What is the difference between Santa Claus and Jesus?” The answer is both simple and profound. Santa comes for those who are good, and Jesus comes for those who are bad. May Christmas be a time of joy for you, as you encounter not just the Baby in the manger, but also the risen Redeemer.
