Pentecost 2006JOHN ROBERT ROWE 1943-2006 Diocesan Treasurer Very many people felt a great sense of loss on hearing of the death of John Rowe, the treasurer of the Diocese of Egypt, on 10th January. His death was very sudden and unexpected. He had successfully overcome major cancer surgery, was in good spirits, and had returned to hospital for what were felt were routine checks. Unfortunately he collapsed and it proved impossible to revive him. He was a fine man, 63 years old with many ideas and much of his life before him. Please make space for him and his family in your thoughts and prayers. His funeral was in Edinburgh and a memorial service was held in Cairo. Also a trip is planned to Gebel Katerina in Sinai by his family, to scatter his ashes during the solar eclipse on 29th March. Bishop Mouneer asked that his message printed below be given at John’s funeral. We here in the Diocese of Egypt received with great sadness the news of the passing away of our dear friend John Rowe. I had known John for more than eight years and he became a close friend. We will never forget his great sense of humour and his continuous willingness to serve in any capacity. He made many friends here in Egypt and became a member of our church family. He was the Diocesan Treasurer for many years and he served in that capacity with all his strength and energy. He never spared his effort and time to serve the Church here. John gave a generous donation towards building a home for the elderly in 6th October City. This project, when completed, will be a constant reminder of his generosity. It was a great privilege to work with him and share his personal joys and tears. His contribution to the life of the Diocese and All Saints’ Cathedral will never be forgotten. I pray that the Lord will give comfort and peace to his family and friends all over the world. |
