    THE REVD PROFESSOR WILLIAM MONTGOMERY WATT

    Also the Revd Professor William Montgomery Watt, who died on 24th October last year. Born in 1909, he was one of the Cathedral staff in Jerusalem from 1943 to 1946, where he was engaged in work on ‘the intellectual approach to Islam’. He returning to Scotland in 1946 and became lecturer in Arabic at Edinburgh University until he retired in 1979. He was given a personal chair in Arabic and Islamic Studies in 1964.
