On 12 January, Christ Church Ayia Napa celebrated the commemoration of Jesus' baptism with a Holy Communion service followed by a special tradition.
The service was led by the parish priest, Revd George Vidiakin and was attended by the deputy mayor of Ayia Napa, Mr. Antonis Christou. After the service, the congregation participated in the traditional cutting of the Vasilopita. The deputy mayor had the honor of cutting the cake, and the coin was discovered in the first piece, which had been dedicated to Jesus Christ — a symbolic moment that highlighted the blessings of the day.
Vasilopita is a traditional cake cut at the beginning of the New Year. A coin (Greek ‘flouri’) is baked into the cake, and the person who finds it is believed to receive blessings and good fortune for the year ahead. This custom serves as a beautiful way to foster community and celebrate hope for the future.
Mrs. Camilla Asprou, the administrator of the Scandinavian church, was also present at the event. Together with Revd George Vidiakin and Mr. Christou, she discussed future opportunities for collaboration between the two congregations and the municipality.
The gathering was marked by joy, meaningful connections, and the shared appreciation of this cherished tradition.
Christ Church Ayia Napa extends gratitude to all who participated in this memorable event and wishes the year 2025 to be the year of God’s blessing!
