Good News for Easter at al Ahli

al Ahli Hospital in Gaza, so often in the news for its heroic service throughout the conflict, in which it was severely damaged, has some good news this Easter

Christian workers pose in St Philip's Church

Richard Sewell, Dean of St George's College reports:

St Philip’s Church in Al Ahli Hospital was used for much of the time during the destruction of Gaza as a hospital ward. The pews became beds for patients needing life-saving treatment from the incredible Al Ahli doctors and nurses.

When the chapel was no longer needed because the casualties were fewer, the chapel was left abandoned and rather worse for wear. So, some of the Christian staff set about cleaning up and restoring it to its original purpose as a place of prayer and worship. This photo shows most of the Christian staff working in Al Ahli who gathered this week for the first act of Christian worship since October 2023.

More needs to be done to repair some of the structural damage done by Israeli missiles but at least it is hearing the sound of gospel prayer and praise once again.

This is a small sign in the wider scheme of things but small signs also convey great hope.

Richard also remiinds us  that the people of Gaza continue to suffer appallingly with no progress towards a just peace and freedom and still need prayer.

He concludes his message:

We thank God for this encouragement.
