Orphans, Animists and Tribal Rivalry: Mission in Gambella

News is emerging from the Diocese of Gambella; one of the most remote and poorest, yet one of the fastest growing in the Province of Alexandria.

Bishop JeremiahThis Diocese has made inter-tribal reconciliation and understanding one of its main mission objectives. Bishop Jeremiah has made this clear. He says,

“For years, the Anglican Church in Gambella has been light and salt in the communities as our diverse congregations of Nuer, Anuak and Opo have chosen the path of unity over division and love over hatred. This legacy shall go on through many generations in the life of our Anglican family. Some try to divide us but you stood firm by upholding Christian orthodox faith and unity. For the Scripture says, “Make every effort to keep the unity of the Spirit through the bond of peace” (Eph.4:3). As a Diocese our vision is to proclaim Christ faithfully to all peoples irrespective of languages.”

Work with children is also a priority. The Anglican Unity School was officially opened in September, 2025, a project of the Anglican Diocese of Gambella in collaboration with the host community around the Cathedral. At the moment children study under a tree with no benches to sit on. There are many orphans who cannot afford to pay School fees and the Diocese is looking for sponsors for them. They are praying for a donor who can help them with permanent classrooms and teacher salaries.

The Street Children Ministry is designed to support those children (orphans) who are roaming the streets of Gambella town. Bishop Kuan has raised funds in Singapore to support this important project. These children come twice a week to eat food and pray together with the Bishop and staff on the team.

Despite its poverty, the Church is in good heart with a lively active Mothers Union and a determined evangelism and outreach team. It encounters and responds to situations that Western churches can only imagine. Recent testimony includes that of a family of nine members, who were animists, who have committed themselves to follow Jesus through discipleship and active participation in the Church.
