God Jul from Ayia Napa

Ecumenical symbols at Advent in Ayia Napa

Advent and Christmas services are great times for ecumenical sharing, whether it be through joint acts of charity or special services.

There has been a long standing partnership in the Gospel between the Lutheran Church in the eastern Cyprus resort town of Ayia Napa, and the Anglican Church who share their premises. In the past this has resulted in joint ministry to young holiday makers who throng the town in the summer. In December when the visitors have left, the congregations can come together in a shared service of anticipation for Christmas. Last week was one such special occasion. The Anglican Chaplain, Rev George Vidiakin writes.

Nearly one hundred people gathered at Christ Church Ayia Napa for a beautiful Service of Lessons and Carols, organised in partnership with the Scandinavian Church.
Together, we sang well-loved carols and listened to the timeless story of Christ’s coming, as told through Scripture readings. The carols were performed in English, while the Biblical passages were read in English and Swedish or Norwegian.

The service was led by the Revd George Vidiakin and the Deacon Annelis Holmedahl (Church of Norway). The music was played by the organist of the Scandinavian church Ayia Napa Mr Terje Holmedahl. The Bible passages were read by the members of both congregations.

The church was filled with the warmth of fellowship, the sound of joyous voices, and the spirit of anticipation for the coming of Christmas.
‘We are so grateful to everyone who joined us and to all who contributed to making this a special evening of worship and celebration,’
Christ church Ayia Napa and the Scandinavian church Ayia Napa have a story of very fruitful ecumenical cooperation. However, the joint Lessons and Carols service was the first of its kind and a new step forward in the ecumenical relationships of two churches. Next joint service will take place on 18 December when both congregations will gather for a Taizé prayer at 1pm.

God Jul is the Christmas greeting in both Swedish and Norwegian. May the hope, peace, and love of the Nativity story continue to inspire us throughout this Advent season.
