Egypt's Christmas Bazaar set to break records

One of the Bazaar stallsThere are Church Bazaars and Christmas Fayres in many parishes throughout the Communion but few can hold a Christmas candle to the annual Bazaar at All Saints Cathedral in Cairo, which this year celebrates its fiftieth anniversary.

It attracts around 130 vendors whose stalls completely fill the extensive cathedral curtilage. In 1975 there were just two tables. The proceeds from the event do not go to those ubiquitous 'church funds' which one sees so often. Charities bid for a share of the money in a similar process to Children in Need from the BBC in the UK. The bidders are invariably Charities, some of which have a Church connection. They include schools, orphanages and hospitals, including a children's cancer hospital.

The event is well known and attracts business sponsorship as well. Items on sale include many which are handmade, Christmas specific items such as decorations or seasonal food, cosmetics and leather goods. It is anticipated that Charities will benefit this year by a record breaking half a million Egyptian pounds (about 10,000 euros). The disbursement will take place at a special event in the new year.a ceramic nativity scene with a cow and a manger
